PREPARATION

  • Preparation is the most important part of your installation process.  No matter what materials are being used whether it is tarmac, block paving, flags, natural stone etc if the base is not laid correctly your hardstanding will not last.

  • Once you have decided on the borders of your driveway, footpath or patio then levels need to be set to have correct water drainage. (Drains, soakaways etc may need to be installed)

  • Site clearance to remove all existing vegitation and spoil to a depth suitable for the intended finished surface. (see diagrams)

EXCAVATION

  • In most cases a mini or micro digger would be used to excavate the area.

  • An approximate area of 30m2 with a dig of 250mm would be around 16 tons of spoil to remove this would either need two 4.5m2 skips or one wagon collection. (This is based on 150mm of MOT type stone, 40-50mm sand base and 50mm finnished block/flags.

SUB-BASE

  • Geo textile membrane is optional but the use of it will stop sub soil mixing with the MOT type 1 stone and prevent fine particle migration.

  • The stone is levelled to the profile set for finnished surface and compacted any voids should be filled with stone and re-compacted to prevent paving sinking in the future.

FINISHED SURFACE

  • There are many different types of finish that are available in todays market and once the above has been completed we are ready to lay the disired surface.

  • Block paving, pressed concrete slabs or cut stone for instance would be laid on a screeded sand bed. (photo on left)

  • Indian stone and other uneven paving products should be layed on a full motar bed and tapped down to disired level. (photo on right)

  • Tarmac, concrete and loose stone would all be laid directly on to the sub-base.
